I am often asked how do you know if you got a good image or not? I always smile, all codes cover this with IQI’s (Image quality indicators). See the right sized hole or wire and you got it. But that is not the biggest mistake when it comes to these little NDT mysterious magical objects. No the biggest mistake made is knowing which hole or wire you actually need to see.
And that boys and girls is also simple, you see when needing to know which hole or wire you not only count the thickness of the pipe or part but in the cases of welds you must include the weld reinforcement both internal and external.
Weld reinforcement is not only the cap sticking above the pipe we can all see that but it is also the bit that is hanging down into the pipe or part that you cannot see unless you are able to stick your head inside to look/see.
So keep shooting good shots and making ideal images.
